Behind the hymn:
“Panis Angelicus” is a hymn composed by César Franck in 1872. Originally written for tenor voice with organ and harp accompaniment, it is part of Franck’s larger work, Messe à trois voix, Opus 12. The text of “Panis Angelicus” is taken from the hymn “Sacris solemniis,” written by Saint Thomas Aquinas in the 13th century for the Feast of Corpus Christi. The hymn celebrates the belief in the transformation of bread and wine into Christ’s body and blood. Franck’s setting is renowned for its melodic beauty and spiritual depth, making it popular at religious ceremonies and classical concerts alike.
