Behind the music:
Ska music originated in Jamaica in the late 1950s, combining elements of Caribbean mento and calypso with American jazz and rhythm and blues. It is characterized by a walking bass line, accented guitar or piano rhythms on the offbeat, and sometimes includes brass instruments. Ska gave rise to rocksteady and reggae, reflecting the cultural and social conditions of Jamaica at the time. Its upbeat sound has influenced various music genres worldwide and continues to have a dedicated following.
